Question by Isaiah O: Do not call lists, publicly posted phone numbers, and solicitation.?
OK first off a little history.
I work for a brand new company that specializes in website SEO and custom software development etc…
we are currently amongst other marketing techniques cold calling companies that we think could benefit from seo.
i know people hate calls of this kind, we only call the businesses and only at specific times. we have had tremendous luck with this.
well i just had two people in organ get mad as they are on a do not call list (first time i have had issues with this) one guy asked for my company info, website, phone number etc… (i gave it all to him) he said it was illegal to call people in the state of organ unless they first call you if their number is on the do not call list.
so what i would like to know is, am i obligated to get this list and look up every number i wish to call?
i do not get my numbers from some data base i actually go through magazine adds and look at the websites before i call. no point in just calling people randomly as that really dosnt work as well as being somewhat informed about potential clients.
so if i get my numbers from a magazine, tv, or website is it illegal to call a company?
lastly what kind of legal action can be taken?
OK it was said there is an exception but state laws might be different. If we follow federal guidelines and laws can we get in trouble with other states then?

Answer by cyanne2ak
Yes, you ARE obligated to compare your list of numbers to those on the Do Not Call list, regardless of where you get those numbers. You may be charged with a federal crime, which has very hefty fines for each violation.

iJoomla Magazine has seven unique modules that make it easy for you to organize your magazine and make it an even better read for your users. Like other Joomla modules, you can display your modules on every available position of your template. Use the modules for navigation and as teasers for different sections of your magazine.
The Magazines module displays a list of all the published magazines and can be used to allow your visitors to navigate between your magazines.
Tip: Place your list high on the left for easy navigation.
The Featured Article module will display the featured article for the issue currently being viewed. If you are looking at issue #1, the module will show the featured article for issue #1; if you’re looking at issue #3, it will show the featured article chosen for issue #3 and so on.
If you are viewing a page that is not a magazine page, this module will display the featured article of the default issue of the default magazine, unless you specify an article on the Default Article ID field, of this module’s backend.
The Issues module displays all of the issues for the magazine currently in view. For example, if you are looking at magazine #1, the module will show the issues for magazine #1.
Use the issues module to give your readers access to published issues of this magazine. If you’re using the issues module to create sections and home pages, you can also use the module to link to different sections of your site.
The purpose of this module is to give your readers a preview of what’s coming up on the next issue of your magazine. The module can displays a title, a part of the article, and a thumbnail, however, none of these will link to the article itself.
You will need to enter the issue ID on this module’s backend in order to display its articles.
The purpose of this module is to show your readers some of the articles of the default issue, or the issue they are currently viewing. The module can displays a title, a intro text, a Read More link and a thumbnail. The title, Read More and image link to the article.
This module displays a list of your authors with their photo thumbnail and/or their recent article(s). You can choose to display their: name, photo, bio, Read More link and articles. This list of authors is taken from your Authors Manager.
Tip: You can create multiple instances of this module to display different things. For example, one module to display some information about the authors, and another to display the authors with their recent articles.
This module can replace the “magazines” and “issues” modules. The advantage of this module is that it creates a menu module with all your magazines, issues or both magazines and issues. Because each of the magazines and issues can have its own menu item, you can assign different modules to each issues or magazines.
On the module settings you can choose to either show only the magazines, only the modules or both. If you choose to show both then the issues of each magazine will be the sub menus of parent magazine.
You can also choose to display the magazines/issues as a drop down menu, instead of a list. Just select Drop Down Menu on the Display Method field.
You can assign the class for the magazine menu items and the issues menu items. By default they are “mainlevel” and “sublevel” which is how it is on Joomla. If you want to use this menu module on top, you may want to remove these classes.
7 modules included;Place each module on any of your template's available positions; Ideal for easy navigation of your magazine and site;Smart display ; modules show the right content for the magazine/issue currently being viewed; All modules are optional but recommended.
The most wanted feature of Joomla! 1.6 is probably the new permissions system, called Access Control List (ACL). With Joomla! 1.6 ACL, you are able to define who has permission to do what on the website, called actions, like the login, configure, access, create, delete, edit and edit state.
These permissions are given to a group of users. You can configure the group permissions on 4 levels: Global configuration, Components and, if applicable, for Categories and Items.
Joomla! ACL is a great tool to define your own groups and their permissions. Unfortunately you will probably not enjoy the new Joomla! permissions system immediately due the difficulty to understand how the system works. It can be quite abstract.
This is where the ACL Manager for Joomla! 1.6 comes in!
The inheritance of permissions between groups and levels and the need to check the settings for a group on 4 levels makes it hard to keep an overview of your settings. If you have tested one of the Joomla! 1.6 Beta's you will probably recognize this. The system has already gotten some critisism for being too complex. Quite strange when the first things I heard about the new ACL system was that it would be very easy to use.
Read more about Joomla 1.6 ACL here
ACLManager for Joomla 1.6 will make it easier to use the Access Control Lists system of Joomla 1.6 and later versions. The extension will consolidate all of the screens into one overview. This makes it easier to see and edit the permissions:
The extension, which will be compatible with Joomla 1.6 or later only, provides you a clean one screen overview of all permission settings over all levels, for a group or user (even if assigned to multiple groups).
The ACL Manager is currently in development by Sander Potjer and is not yet available but expected during Joomla! 1.6 RC period.
I had a small chat with Sander about ACL Manager today and he told me he's currently developing the extension by himself. Of course, I had to ask him some more questions:
Will ACL Manager be commercial or free?
- I haven't decided yet if the ACL Manager will be commercial or free, I have some other plans for the extension and website that I currently work out, depending on the result of it I will decide. If I decide to go for a commercial version it will have a very low price and I will make sure that users that don't want to pay for it also have some benifits of the project.
What's the reason you had for developing the extension?
- My main focus is to make sure that many people will understand the Joomla 1.6 ACL to get the best out of it and know how to use it for their projects.
- I think that many people underestimate the impact and difficulty to set up a Joomla 1.6 site with good ACL settings. If we don't make it more understandable many users will stick with Joomla 1.5, which is a pity because 1.6 has many other nice new features. I can also imagine that there will be ACL implementors to set up good ACL for complicated websites, like we now have extension developers, designers, or people that are good in converting a design to a Joomla template.
How has the project been received by the Joomla community?
- I posted the screenshots on Flickr a few months ago to see if people liked the idea and if it was worthfull to put energy in the deveopment of it. The community response via twitter, skype, email, and responses from JUG's has been overwhelming, many people concluded that it is a must have to understand ACL and that is should be included into core. So thanks to that great response and feedback I decided to continue with the project, with many new ideas for the ACL Manager. So that's why I have launched www.aclmanager.net this week, and again I received many great responses from all over the world.
- It all started when I was digging into the Joomla 1.6 ACL to prepare a presentation about it on a Joomla bootcamp in Amsterdam, how do I explain it on a understandable way...? Via sketches on paper and Excel sheets, I converted it to an extension. I will do the presentation also this weekend at JoomlaDay UK on Saturday and Sunday.
Amy Stephen has written a good overview of the functionality in the ACLManager here. I don't see any reason to go into details as Amy's explanation is so well written :)

Vector images can not be pixelate up to any dimension and not lose the image quality because vector images have not fix resolution. That’s why designers use it for making print ads, flash animations because it gives great flexibility. So if you are looking for abstract vector art or abstract vector designs for your design project then this post is dedicated to you, feel free to download these vectors and use it in your next project.

Adding quotes is super easy and allows your users to understand the content of the article with just a glance. Our professionally designed quote boxes give your articles that special touch.
Quotes are a small piece of your copy that you'd like to emphasis on your article page.
You can add as many quotes as you wish on each page. We recommend one to two quotes for short articles and more for longer articles.
Select iJoomla Magazine -> Manage Content -> Articles from the menu.Under the column marked "Article Source", find and open the content item you'd like to edit.Choose the text you'd like to quote and enter a quotes tag in the beginning and a closing quotes tag at the end.Save the page, check the result and tweak as needed. This will display the quotes in an approximate location to the source text.
Note: Quotes work only in full text ! don't add them to your intro text!
Quotes align to the left by default but If you'd like to align the quote box to the right, add align=right to the opening tag: {quotes align=right}. The closing tag should remain the same.

A client accesses a copy of the data near to the client, as opposed to all clients accessing the same central server, so as to avoid bottleneck near that server.
Content types include web objects, download-able objects (media files, software, documents), applications, real time media streams, and other components of internet delivery (DNS, routes, and database queries).
There are currently three main CDN extensions available for Joomla, and I've just installed one on this site. I'm happy with the result - I hope you notice the difference in speed! In this post, I'll look at what CDN is, take a look at two different CDN extensions for Joomla and how to set up CDN using jomCDN from corephp.
CDN is a Content Delivery Network of highly-optimized servers all around the world working together to distribute your content (CSS and Javascript files, downloadable objects, applications, real-time media streams, and much more) through hundreds of servers instead of a single host. This "smart route" technology makes sure each visitor to your site gets their data from the city closest to them.
Each visitor to your site gets their data from the city closest to themSmall or large, if you're looking to grow your business online, CDN is considered by many as a must-have. By bringing your content close to the user's connection point, CDN will provide your site with much faster load times, superior scalability, and guaranteed uptime. A faster loading site not only makes your visitors happy, it can also earn you a few extra points toward a higher ranking on the major search engines. Load time has become a significant factor in getting good search engine rankings during the last year.
Last week, we saw the release of two CDN extensions for Joomla in a single day. The way they work are quite different.
jomCDN is a plug-in which automatically compiles the assets (images, javascript files, css files, etc.), syncs them to Amazon servers and automatically relinks all your page content to the Amazon servers. The plug-in supports both Amaon S3 and Amazon Cloudfront.
See below for how to set up this extension.
Price: $29.95
Read more about jomCDN
This extension rewrites the URLs and uses an active CDN which automatically fetches static content from your server. This extension is created to use the MaxCDN service or other similar CDN services.
Price: The non-commercial version is free. The commercial license costs from €15.
Read more about CDN for Joomla
According to the developer, It works on a simple principle of image upload and updating their location path on the fly. Once you upload your folder (images / files) to the Amazon S3, the plugin updates the location path of uploaded files and on client request, all uploaded files are requested from Amazon S3 and not from the site folders. This in turns save the server load and bandwidth at the same time loading is faster on the client end. Disable the plugin and your file links are back to normal.
The extension is a component with full-blown Amazon s3 explorer built in. You can update even a single file to s3. The next version is coming soon, featuring an exclude folders function.
Price: Included in the JoomlArt Club packages

As you can see, these plugins work in different ways. I chose the jomCDN extension, but you really have to take a look and see what fits your needs and style best.
As much as I wanted to give you a detailed instruction on how to set it up, I'd rather direct you to this excellent instruction on how to set up CDN for Joomla :)
1. Buy the jomCDN plugin
Click here to purchase the corePHP jomCDN plugin for Joomla.
2. Install the plugin
Install the plug-in using the Joomla administrator -> Extensions.
The plug-in will be available in the plug-in manager:
Don't activate the plug-in yet!
3. Sign up for Amazon S3 and Cloudfront
Before you start setting up the plug-in, you need to sign up for the services Amazon S3 and Amazon Cloudfront.
Your server must run PHP 5.2 or later.
4. Create a bucket in Amazon S3
Once you have created an account with Amazon S3, create a bucket through your AWS Management Console. You can create the bucket in any origin server you want. The developer recommends US – Standard or N. California.
Clicking the 'Create bucket' button will open a new window:
4. Insert bucket name
Once you have your bucket created, copy the name of the bucket to the plugin parameters on the right side.
5. Insert Amazon credentials
Now we need your Amazon credentials. These are unique to your AWS account. You can get these from the Security Credentials page.
You will need your 'Access Key ID' and 'Secret Access Key.' Copy those Keys to the plugin parameters on the right.
6. Activate the plug-in
At this point you can start using this plug-in, although we HIGHLY recommend you set up Amazon CloudFront. Once again, instead of objectrequests taking 500-800ms depending on location, CloudFront will increase the speed to an average of 20-30ms, which is a significant difference.
You can sign up for Cloudfront using the tab in the AWS Management Console:
7. Set up CloudFront (Optional/Recommended)
Once you have enabled CloudFront on your account, you need to create a Distribution from the CloudFront Management Console. You will create the distribution for the bucket that you previously created, and the Delivery Method will need to be set to Download. (Setting up a CNAME is not recommended at this time, as it does not support https requests.)
Once created, Amazon will create a unique Domain Name for your distribution.
You will need to copy this domain name as is to the 'CloudFront' option in the plugin parameters.
You now need to set up a cron job. This is something you should ask your hosting provider to do for you.
For general information about setting up a cron job, see the Wikipedia article on Cron. For information regarding your hosting provider, visit your hosting provider’s FAQ or manual pages.
Note to Windows Users: There are similar programs to cron available if your host runs Windows. VisualCron, Cron for Windows and pycron are all examples. Consult these projects' documentation for further information.
1. Change the Cron Job URL Parameter from the Advanced Parameters to something unique for your website. This cron job URL should be accessed at least once a day, but it all depends on the cache lifetimes that you set up.
2. Set up a UNIX cron job to have your server periodically view your cron job URL using a command-line HTTP agent like wget, curl or GET. The command to execute will look like this:
wget -N http://example.com/?cdn_run_cron
Where “cdn_run_cron” is the URL parameter that you set. If you use a different program than wget, substitute that program and its arguments for wget in this line.
If you don't know how to set up a cron job, talk to your hosting company, they will be able to set it up easily.
3. Enable the plugin
After you have set up the cron job, you can enable the plugin using the plugin manager.
4. Browse to your cron job URL
Once the plugin is enabled, browse to your cron job URL manually, this will create the necessary database tables.
5. Browse your site
You can then browse through as many pages on your website as you can. This will cache all of the pages to the server.
6. Visit the cron job URL
When you are done, visit the cron job URL again. This will push all of the files over to the CDN. As files get pushed over, the new URLs of the files will be displayed when browsing your website. As time goes on, people that use your website will visit new pages, and new files will be found every time that the cron job runs. Those files will be pushed to the CDN and then the new URL of the file will be displayed in the source code of your HTML pages.
That's it - your site will now be able to use Amazon servers for content distribution.
I had trouble getting the syncronization to Amazon S3 to work with my server. After much back and forth the corePHP support guys found that my server had the incorrect time. It turns out my server had gotten an incorrect time after a reboot the day before. This caused the sync with the Amazon S3 bucket to fail, as the time difference was too large. Make sure your server time is correct to avoid this.
I haven't tested this extension myself, but the below video will show you how to set it up.
From what I've heard, Amazon is a cheaper solution for smaller sites. That means jomCDN from corephp or the JA Amazon S3 Component from JoomlArt will be a better choice.
If your site is large (in the Terrabyte traffic range), the CDN for Joomla extension from nonumber.nl might be better.
I chose jomCDN for my site, and I think it works well. I already had an account with Amazon, so the signup process was very easy to do.
The capacity sum of strategically placed servers can be higher than the network backbone capacity. This can result in an impressive increase in the number of concurrent users. For instance, when there is a 10 Gbit/s network backbone and 100 Gbit/s central server capacity, only 10 Gbit/s can be delivered. But when 10 servers are moved to 10 edge locations, total capacity can be 10×10 Gbit/s.
Strategically placed edge servers decrease the load on interconnects, public peers, private peers and backbones, freeing up capacity and lowering delivery costs. It uses the same principle as above. Instead of loading all traffic on a backbone or peer link, a CDN can offload these by redirecting traffic to edge servers.
Incorporating a CDN with your website provides you with several benefits, including the following:
Faster Page Loads - Since most of your files will be served from a much closer location to your end-users, the speed in which your page loads will be greatly increased.Reduced Server Load - Since most of your files are no longer served by your own host, your server will be freed up to perform the basic tasks required of it.Handle More Visitors - Because of the improvements just mentioned and other factors, your website will be able to handle the strain of a much larger user base that it could otherwise.Higher SEO Rankings - Caused by the increase in performance to your site, something Google recently claimed effects SEO rankings.CDN for Joomla! is made to work with any CDN system that supports Pull Zones.
A Pull Zone works in a way that you do not have to upload any media. The Pull Zone uploads the media to the CDN servers as soon as it is required. Read more on Pull Zones here: http://wiki.netdna.com/FAQ/Pull_Zones
Below, I've listed some links for you to see where some of the providers keep their centres:
I hope this post has inspired you to take a look at the CDN solutions available for Joomla. I won't use it for every site I build, but I definitely will use jomCDN for some of the sites that have an international audience.
TIP: If you don't want to do the setup of this plug-in yourself, ask these guys for help.

Question by Kartik Ghoshal: how to increase my torrent download speed?
i have a vodafone mobile connect, it gives me 236 kbps download speed. surfing is good and download with orbit is also good. gives speed upto 30kbps. in case of torrent files, movies , it gives very low speed, nearly 8 kbps. i hv used utorrent, bittorrent, bitcommet, bitlord. all same. firewall is blocked in windows settings, get good seeding in bitlord, but no good speed.
Best answer:
Answer by Johnathan J
I use utorrent, and I download at 1.2mb/s. All I did, is right click the torrent, set the bandwidth allocation to high, and set my download speed to unlimited. Make sure you have a lot of seeders, and unblock everthing in the firewall. This is what I do, and I download 900mb movies in about 15-20 minutes.

I began to grow slowly by word of mouth and by repeat clients as they saw the quality of work that I was producing. Things quickly grew to more than I could handle by myself and I began hiring. We’re currently located in downtown Graham, North Carolina (in between Greensboro and Raleigh). It’s a small town but we’re close to several major cities.
I see you have divided your company into several divisions. How is that organized?
We may be a small company but we have several roles that we play. We offer custom website design and development, search engine marketing, and website maintentance and support for our clients through WebSpark Design. We then have several divisions that deal with more software, web application development. Both JForce and Extension Depot handle extension creation and development and act more as a standard software company. We then have a division where we can offer support and help to other designers and developers. MyCodeSpark and PSD2Template provide either instruction or tools that help educate and expedite other companies that are in similar fields to us. We’ve got a pretty fair amount of information on our corporate site, www.WebSparkInc.com, that explains each division and what we accomplish within each. We have a strong interest in seeing our industry grow and the Joomla! community become more knowledgeable; and I feel that the products and services available from each WebSpark Inc. division fall in line with our business mission: To support companies and help them manage their online presence.
Why did you start developing the project management solution JForce?
JForce started as a project for internal use only. We found that we needed a project management tool to handle our WebSpark Design clients and there was nothing suitable available. We loved Joomla! even back then when it was 1.0 and knew we wanted to develop a component that we could integrate directly into our website. We developed JForce to work on Joomla! and never looked back. We have continued to improve the code and have released several major upgrades including JForce PM most recently which is a major overhaul of the entire system - we had approximately 95% code re-write with this latest version. Along the way we incorporated key features that are not even available within Joomla! yet, but will be released with the upcoming Joomla! 1.6 version. We’re very excited about this aspect as this puts us squarely on the cutting edge of Joomla! development.
Was it important for you to create it as a Joomla component, and if so, why?
As a company we’ve worked with Joomla! since its inception and with its predecessor as well. We have found Joomla! to have the absolute easiest admin panel for our clients and quite honestly some of the best code available in a CMS- proprietary, commercial, or open source. With the release of Joomla! 1.6, I firmly believe that the Joomla! project is way beyond the competition. I knew immediately that we would develop our project management system for Joomla!. As a matter of fact, we’ve been able to extend the Joomla! framework and build JForce PM as a stand-alone application. This means we will be offering a version of JForce that does not require the CMS at all! The power of Joomla! as a framework is amazing and comparable to Code Ignitor and other rapid application development frameworks.
So, what's been the greatest challenges while developing the software? I guess you've had some ups and downs along the way?
As with all software companies, we have certainly experienced our share of ups and downs. We had tremendous growth initially, far more than I ever anticipated and that caused some large support issues. This bothered me quite a bit as our custom design and development work under WebSpark Design is based on solid, high-quality support and attention to our client’s needs. Unfortunately, I did not have a great deal of experience with a software company business model and had a lot to learn. I found some great mentors and advisers that helped me and after many sleepless nights and hundreds of hours of restructuring and establishing support practices we are now able to re-emerge with JForce PM as a product that I, personally, am proud of and proud to put the WebSpark name behind.
Why did you decide to go for a GPL licence model?
The GPL license is a big issue these days. We sat down and discussed the various pros and cons of both sides and put serious thought into our position. We initially decided that by making our Professional version a proprietary license we could better secure the code and keep our high standard of quality. We also felt this would help increase our “worth” as it would give us a proprietary software. We quickly changed our minds. I felt we had spent too much time making our code beautiful. I didn’t want it hidden. We decided a better approach would be to make our code GPL, compliant with Joomla! regulations, thereby helping to teach other developers as they build on our system how to write amazing code.
That's great, David! You're involved in the Joomla project in addition to developing Joomla extensions and sites. Can you tell us a little about that, and why you think it's important to be involved?
As I’ve worked with Joomla! I’ve become more interested in giving back to this great community. I’ve tried to help out in as many areas as I can. I’ve joined the Joomla! bug squad to help with squashing bugs in Joomla! 1.6 so that can be pushed out. I’ve recently written an article for the Joomla! magazine, and I post in the Joomla! forums as I have time. It is hard to find ways to get deeply involved, and I’ll admit that even though I hear the calls for community help, it’s difficult to actually get in and get your hands dirty. We’ve also had the opportunity to work on a custom version of JForce for Joomla.org. I’m very excited about offering our project back to better support the Joomla! community; and am honored by their vote of confidence in our product.
David's article in the Joomla! Community Magazine, oct 2010 issueWhat, in your opinion, are the greatest strengths of Joomla?
That’s a great question. Joomla! has many strengths and it would take a while to go into detail about all of them so I’ll pick just a few that come to my mind immediately. Joomla! has amazing code. Easy to read, well documented, and following the commonly recognized best practices. Might not be a big deal to some, but when evaluating frameworks and CMS platforms it becomes readily apparent that the code behind Joomla! has been well thought-out and carefully planned.
The second strength that I’d mention quickly is the Joomla! community. A strong, growing group of people dedicated to the continued improvement of Joomla!. I am impressed with the fact that although there are always differences of opinions and different views on direction, everyone has the same goal - making Joomla! the number one framework and CMS in the world. And that’s just a couple of reasons why I believe Joomla! is unstoppable.
So, where would you like Joomla to go in the future?
I see Joomla! future as bright. As a business owner building both websites and software applications on Joomla! I have tremendous faith in the future of Joomla!
Joomla! has many paths it can explore and I expect great things as far as developing the framework as a standalone framework that others can use more readily for rapid application development and a very small footprint. I also would like to see some options as far as installable CMS packages as well, maybe built for specific vertical markets or industries to allow for an even quicker installation, setup and launch of a new site.
Finally, any other thoughts you want to share with the readers of JoomlaBlogger?
I’d say that if there are any developers out there looking for a platform to develop for Joomla! is an excellent choice. For website designers and developers I’d encourage you to always choose the best tool for the job. I love Joomla! but I do not blindly recommend it for all projects - as the Lead Developer at WebSpark Design, I have to evaluate each project carefully and pair it with the right tool.
That being said Joomla! is a fantastic tool and JForce PM as a project management system for Joomla! is the perfect compliment. I encourage you to drop me an email if you have questions, check out our site at http://www.jforce.com/ for JForce and experience our customer support and high quality work for yourself.
Thanks, David, and good luck on the development of jForce and all your other projects!

Question by mylilbubbers: Keywords and SEO help?
I’m trying to understand what methods others are using when looking for keywords. I’m using google’s traffic estimator and keyword tool, however, it doesn’t seem to be very reliable when relating back to keywords that actually get traffic. Can anyone please help me out and let me know what you are using? I would be willing to put a link to your site for the advice.

Amy Stephen and myself started out doing a series of shows on The Art of Community by Jono Bacon last Spring that was a huge success. Then Amy took some time off, and Alice Grevet came on-board and we kicked off a series of shows on Joomla Templates and Joomla Extensions that have been really popular as well.
Recently, JoomStew has been going through some changes to it's show schedule, and with it we've added our NewsBrief episodes that offer interviews with various Joomla! Community members. This has been a great addition to the schedule, but it's become double and sometimes triple the workload for Alice and myself.
Don't get me wrong, we love what we do, but with our day jobs and other commitments in and around the Joomla Community, it can become too much for us to handle on a weekly basis. That's why we've missed some episodes here and there.
So we are excited to announce, we are expanding our pool of talent, with the addition of Dianne Henning to the JoomStew Radio lineup!
That's right… Dianne will become our News Anchor on the weekly JoomStew Radio podcast, and in addition, will pick up some of the NewsBrief interviews that will be coming to you on a regular basis as well. We'll trade off doing interviews and such, and see where it will go from there.
Personally, I'm really excited to see the JoomStew family growing, and it's solely because of our great listeners who keep stopping by week after week.
We're working on some things that will hopefully make visiting our website a better experience for you, and also allow us to showcase some of the great extensions we talk about on our show as well!
Listen for Dianne, Alice and myself this week on our first episode together as we interview Stian Didriksen to talk about the Ninjaboard Forum Component and Nooku Framework. More news about that later today!
Welcome aboard Dianne, and look out Joomla World... JoomStew is about to Rock!

The first release candidate for Joomla 1.6 is just around the corner, so a stable release shouldn’t be too far away.
What does it take to move your Joomla site to Joomla 1.6? Read on for some tips :)
The server requirements for Joomla 1.6 is slightly higher than for Joomla 1.5.
Your server should be at least:
You can check the version of your current server logging in to the Joomla Administrator and take a look at the System Info screen:
If you’re planning to move your site to Joomla 1.6, now is a good time to review your extensions. I’ve talked to people who are still on Joomla 1.0 because they can’t get a Joomla 1.5 version of a certain extension.
You should take a look at the extensions you use and see if the developer has plans for a Joomla 1.6 version. Some extensions, like Akeeba Backup, are already ready for Joomla 1.6 (or close to it).
Choosing a Joomla extension is something you should put some thoughts into. Trying to determine the future of an extension is hard, but you could get some hints by reviewing comments on the Joomla Extensions Directory, the developers website and looking at forums or other ways the developer communicates with the users.
In my opinion, the success of Joomla 1.6 largely depends on how fast developers are converting their extensions. They all need to do that to have their extensions take advantage of the new ACL system and other features.
Same thing goes for your template or templates. Templates need to be upgraded for Joomla 1.6 as well. Some template developers, like JoomlArt, have already started to offer Joomla 1.6 ready templates.
Sub templates are another new feature of Joomla 1.6. I think we will se many Joomla template developers taking advantage of that in their commercial template products.
Perhaps the time is right to upgrade your site with a brand new template when moving to Joomla 1.6? Fresh look, fresh start :)
As far as I know, migration of content from Joomla 1.5 to 1.6 should be easy to do. I’ve heard there will be a migration script that convert the database tables and the setup into the Joomla 1.6 way of doing things.
How the migration is going to work exactly is not clear at the moment. I feel this is something which will need to be in place for a Joomla 1.6 implementation to be successful.
As with all new software versions, you need to learn some new stuff. The main new thing in Joomla 1.6 is ACL, the permissions system. The ACL (Access Control List) system is quite complex, so you need to spend some time to understand it. When setting up a site, it will be important to set up the ACL correctly and with a thought through process.
I would recommend you download and install the latest beta version of Joomla 1.6 beta, and play around with it. That’s the best way to learn about it. Just don’t install it on a live site yet.

Today, the Joomla Project announced the immediate availability of Joomla 1.6 beta 14 (download). IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a beta version and is not intended to run any type of production site. It is intended to be used for evaluation purposes only.
Since the Joomla 1.6 beta 13 release on November 1, the team has fixed approximately 69 issues in the tracker. They have closed an additional 45 tracker issues. At the present time, they have 5 issues that are blocking the release 1.6 Release Candidate 1.
This progress is directly related to the continued efforts of the Joomla! Bug Squad. Thanks to everyone involved for all your hard work in bringing us one increment closer to a stable release of Joomla 1.6!
See the CHANGELOG below for details of what has been changed in this release.
Mark Dexter wrote a message in the Joomla! Bug Squad Google Group earlier today:
As you know, we will release beta14 later today (15 November). At present we have 11 RC blockers in the tracker, but 3 of those are RTC and one is Pending. Also, several others are being worked on and we believe solutions for them are close. Given this, we have a fighting chance of having beta 14 be the last
beta version and having RC1 out in 2 weeks.
I really hope they'll manage to pull this off. However, there has been several attempts in the past to get a release ready before Christmas. History tells us it's not an easy thing to do. Christmas is normally a down-time with people being busy in other areas.
So, I guess it's more realistic to believe we'll see a release candidate of Joomla 1.6 early in 2011.
This is the 14th in the series of continuous beta releases. Beta 15 (or possibly 1.6 Release Candidate 1) will be released on November 29, 2010.

“Updation?”
Neat word.
Google’s updates for searches happen daily, but you’re going against sites that have been active and visited for years. The average amount of time for a site to “get noticed” on Google Searches is about four to six months, depending on how much traffic the site gets.

When Alice thought of the idea, we didn't even think to ask sponsors to offer prizes, but the day we went to publish the announcement, we decided to ask a few friends if they wanted to support our efforts and give away some cool stuff.
Thankfully, several of our friends stepped up to sponsor the contest, and low and behold it took off. You can see the full list of winners and prizes on the DoomStew Winners 2010 page, but here's the quick list if you're in a hurry.

We get a lot of messages about iJoomla Magazine and the iJoomla News Portal. Some publishers are struggling to decide which component suits their site best.
These are two very different components that do very different things. It's important to make the right choice.
iJoomla Magazine comes with one plugin and seven modules, and was designed for a website updated on a weekly or monthly basis. Publishers can create magazines and issues, and add articles from any section or category. When an issue is made live, iJoomla Magazine shows the new articles in the same order that they appear on the backend. Two main zones -- vertical and horizontal -- keep the display pleasing to the eye, and a special zone for the main image attracts attention.
Publishers can also add images to their magazines as well as sidebars, quotes and author bios. With just a little effort, you can create a really slick magazine with issues and articles published automatically. In short, the magazine component allows publishers to create a professional-looking weekly or monthly magazine, and allows anyone to create a better-looking site look using the layouts and styles available.
The iJoomla News Portal enables publishers to provide a constant, automatic flow of news. Each newly-added article appears first as the Top Story then flows down to the Leading Stories zone as more articles are added.
Publishers can determine which sections, categories and articles follow this news format, and images are resized automatically according to the publisher's specifications. The idea is to create an automatic stream of stories, letting publishers offer as much content as they want without breaking a sweat.
This component comes with one menu module to display a link to all the different sections.
If you're creating an online magazine, iJoomla Magazine is an obvious choice. But if you're not creating an online magazine, you can still use the component to organize the content of a static site in a more attractive manner. The layouts and the flexibility make creating an eye-catching, professional-looking site very easy.
On the other hand, if you have a dynamic site that relies on fresh content that changes all the time, the automated features of the News Portal component will make your life a great deal easier.
12 available, assign different layouts to different issues.3 available, 1 for each news page: home, section, category.1 Default style and add as many as you likeFAQ: Which component is right for my needs?
Can I switch license between iJoomla Magazine and iJoomla News Portal?
No, these are two completely different components. They are not changeable and cannot be upgraded from one to the other.
I already bought iJoomla Magazine and now I think iJoomla News Portal is more suitable to my needs, what can I do?
You can buy the News Portal, use it for the news, and continue to use your existing magazine component to give your site a better look and feel with the help of our layouts. Remember, iJoomla Magazine is not just for online magazines!
I have a huge amount of articles. Which component is better for me?
iJoomla Magazine will require you to add the articles to your issues manually so the iJoomla News Portal might be better for sites with a large number of articles. All the content will be added automatically.
I don't need to publish news or a magazine but I want my site to look great. Which component is right for me?
iJoomla Magazine. It's great for static content that doesn't need to change frequently. The component can make any site look professional.
I only have a few articles and I will be adding a few more every week. Which component is the right solution for me?
iJoomla Magazine. You'll be able to build up articles for your issue and publish each issue once you have enough articles. (We recommend at least five articles per issue.)
I want to build an archive so that my visitors see previous issues of my magazine. Which component should I choose?
iJoomla Magazine offers several modules that provide an archive-like feature: "magazines" displays a link to all the magazines; "issues" displays a link to all the magazine's issues; and the dynamic menu module displays a menu to all the magazines, all of the issues or both.
The iJoomla News Portal, however, is dynamic--the content is not organized in issues and the component does not offer any archiving features. If you need a comprehensive archive page, check out our iJoomla Search & Archive extension.

As a Joomla user, I hope you're familiar with the Content Creation Kit extension K2 from JoomlaWorks. It's a great piece of free software from our Greek friends.
In the beginning of September this year, Joomlaworks released their new component K2Mart. K2mart integrates Virtuemart and K2, allowing you to build your product catalog using K2's advanced content, taxonomy and templating options with Virtuemart's powerful cart and checkout functionality.
This week, version 1.3 of K2 Mart is out, with several exciting new features. Among them, better image handling and a new
The aim of Joomlaworks when they released K2mart about 1.5 months ago, was to help you get a great looking Virtuemart based e-shop by importing and syncing your Virtuemart products into K2 with the help of K2mart.
Styling K2 is much easier than with Virtuemart. The reason for that being K2 using the Joomla MVC templating system. The template and subtemplate system of K2 is easy to set up and manage. Bringing K2 and Virtuemart together is as natural as it is relieving. Being a webshop owner with Virtuemart myself, I can testify to the pains connected with styling and managing the system. I look forward to setting up a testing version of my webshop.
With version 1.3 Joomlaworks takes K2Mart one step further and actually turns the extenstion into your primary dashboard with the new "quick look" stats available, directly derived from the Virtuemart database. Something impossible in Virtuemart up to now. Virtuemart can provide sales statistics, but they are "accountant" style boring statistics...
Your Joomla! control panel (the first page you see when you login as an administrator) is also dead boring. So Joomlaworks thought "why not ease your e-commerce management experience and save some clicks"? And so they brought the K2mart Virtuemart sales stats on the Joomla! control panel as well.
One of the new features is the new K2Mart charts admin module. The module lives in your Joomla admin control panel and presents an overview of total sales and top selling products in a nicely done chart:
The K2Mart charts admin module, bottom left (click for larger image)Adds Ajax based "add to cart" functionality to every K2 item/product.Built-in migrator will migrate all your Virtumart products and categories to K2 with a single click. The K2mart migrator will also import Virtuemart product/categories images and will create K2 tags for Virtuemart categories, further improving your e-shop's SEO.Brings all Virtuemart product properties like manufacturers, discounts, product status, product attributes and so on into K2.Create and edit products directly through the K2 item form. "Quick edit" links next to some properties like VAT, Manufacturers etc. will open up a lightbox popup to Virtuemart so you can add/edit them without leaving the K2 item form.Redirect all Virtuemart product details and shop browse pages to the corresponding K2 views. Virtuemart will only be used for the cart & checkout procedure. The Virtuemart elements output by K2mart are a breeze to theme! Using MVC overrides, you can completely control the output of the Virtuemart elements inside your K2 items. Furthermore, you can control which cart elements to display on the a K2 item page, on K2 listings or on K2 items output through K2 modules. So for example, you can hide the tax rate on product listings, but show it on the product page. These elements are configured from the K2mart component settings without the need to edit code.Read more about the features of K2Mart hereThe Virtuemart image importing options in K2mart has been improved. IN previous versions, there was one option only: import VM images on the first product import/sync to K2.
However, webshops with hundreds or even thousands of products (and associated images) would have a hard time importing those images into K2. This comes down basically to server resources and how much control you got over your server. For that reason, Joomlaworks re-devised the way VM product images are imported as K2 item images and we have added these new options in the new K2mart component parameters:
You can select to directly link to your Virtuemart stored images (and fit into K2 with HTML resizing) orYou can import your Virtuemart stored images as K2 item images. The real difference compared to the importing method in the Virtuemart Migrator page is that this occurs on "runtime". So instead of doing the import as a one-time job (with the Virtuemart Migrator page in K2mart), you let your e-shop visitors help you out: Whenever they visit a K2 product page, K2mart will dynamically pull and resize the Virtuemart image. For more info on these new image import handling features, take a look at the K2mart documentation page.
In addition to the image handling functions and the control panel, the following new features can be found in K2Mart 1.3:K2mart is NOT meant to replace K2 or Virtuemart. It just creates a bridge between the two components for the shop owner's benefit.
Virtuemart's multiple categories are NOT supported. If a product is mapped to more than one Virtuemart categories, K2mart will intelligently map the product to the deepest level category in the K2 category tree and additionally, it will write all categories assigned per product as K2 tags.
The K2Mart developers suggest that product multi-mapping is better executed using tags.
I will be testing K2Mart on a copy of one of my Virtuemart webshops, www.kaffekapsler.no. If it's as good as it looks, I might switch the whole thing over to K2Mart. I really need a pain-relief from working with Virtuemart. Especially
